Frequently Asked Questions

Orientation

How do I register for orientation?

Please register for New Student Orientation 2009 programs by clicking on the registration link. Orientation is free to all new students and families.

I missed the registration deadline. What should I do?

There is no registration deadline for orientation. We ask that you try to register as soon as possible so that we can plan our events better. You and your family are welcome to attend orientation events regardless of your registration status.

Are accommodations provided during the Orientation program?

Students living in the residence halls will stay in the residence halls. Parents and families can find local accommodations in the Travel and Hotel section of this Web site.

Is transportation provided from local airports, train, or bus stations?

While Pitt does not provide transportation, the City of Pittsburgh has an extensive busing system. Visit the Port Authority Web site to find out which bus will take you to and from campus. As a Pitt student, you are able to ride the buses for free with your Pitt ID.

My family can only stay for a short time. What programs are the most important?

It is a good idea to review the orientation schedule before coming to campus. That way you and your family can decide which events are most important to you. We provide many programs specifically for parents and families, including a presentation on college parenting, Panther Parents Association information sessions, and a continental breakfast. There is also a special program and reception just for parents with Vice Provost and Dean of Students Kathy Humphrey, titled "Educating the Whole Student: What Every Parent Should Know." Another important event for both students and parents is Provost James Maher's "Pathway to Your Success at Pitt" presentation. Also, it is common for parents and families to attend together both Freshman Convocation and the Chancellor's Welcome Picnic. You can find a more detailed description as well as dates and times for each of these programs in your New Student Orientation schedule. Transitioning to college is a big milestone for a student, and family involvement is encouraged.

Where can I go if I need help during orientation?

Everyone at the University of Pittsburgh is here to help you; however, if you find yourself in need of some assistance, there are two main locations. Tables will set up in the Towers Lobby (located between Towers A, B, and C) with various staff and students who can assist you with any questions you may have. Also, located in the Lower Lounge of the William Pitt Union is Orientation Station, where First Year Mentors and Student Affairs staff will be available to assist you.

What is the Panther Card?

The Panther Card is your student identification card. It is your access card to your residence hall, fitness centers, libraries, computer labs and gives you access to your meal plan. This card also provides you free access to the busing system and much more! You can go to the Panther Central Web site for more information.

How do I get involved in student organizations?

Throughout Orientation there will be various opportunities to become familiar with student organizations. One of the most popular events, the Activities Fair, occurs on Sunday. This is an opportunity to meet all of the student organizations, learn about what they do, and sign up to become a member.

What things should I not bring?

The Residential Handbook gives you all the policies and procedures for living in the residence halls, including items that are not allowed. You may either pick up a hard copy of the handbook at the Office of Residence Life, or download it here (PDF).
