First Year Experience

Elizabeth Dowling

Portrait of Elizabeth DowlingMy name is Elizabeth Dowling, and I am from Irwin/Greensburg, PA, just East of Pittsburgh. I am a junior this year and majoring in Accounting at Pitt’s College of Business Administration. I hope to also include a minor in Economics and becoming a CPA upon graduation. Throughout my sophomore year I became involved in Women in Business, which I am the VP of Member Relations for, and the University of Pittsburgh Accounting Association.

I love Pitt because of the endless possibilities here. I would have to say my favorite aspect of Pitt is its diversity. You are presented with the opportunity to meet people of all backgrounds, races, religions, and cultures. I love meeting new people and discussing topics with people who have opinions different from my own, and just enjoying the company of friends. My favorite things to do with friends include snowball fights on Soldiers and Sailors lawn, walks and talks, and any spontaneous activities. The element of surprise is always the best!

I am returning for my second year as a First Year Mentor (FYM) after all of the wonderful experiences I shared with last year’s freshman class. I wanted to become a FYM after attending Pitt Odyssey in July before beginning college. Here I met many of my closest friends at Pitt and also my FYMs. It was through these FYMs that my love for the University grew and my first experiences at Pitt began. Looking back on my freshman year, these are some of my fondest memories! By becoming an FYM I hope to share with incoming students the wonderful experiences that I enjoyed as well as instill in them love for the University of Pittsburgh and especially Pitt pride.

Orientation week is full of fun activities and chances to meet many new people before classes begin. I’m most excited for the Luau! The Luau has been my favorite Orientation event for the past two years; freshman year because I met some of my best friends from college and sophomore year because I was part of the planning committee for this successful event.

I look forward to meeting many of the incoming freshmen and sharing with them some of the most memorable experiences of their college career!
